14 Things You Need to Know as a New Nurse
14 Things You Need to Know as a New NurseSo youve made it. You want to be a nurse and now youre ready to begin your nursing career. Here are 14 tips from actual nurses, things they wish theyd known back when they first were starting out, that can help set you on a steeper learning curve as a new nurse. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1472832388529-0) ) 1. Your schedule is different on paper vs. in real lifeYour schedule might look totally doablea manageable series of shifts (most hospitals would say 3 shifts of 12 hours each). But when you factor in changeover duties, exchanging important patient information before and after each work day, and your commute? Those days are easily 15 hours. And those four days off per week? Forget it. Be ready for the 5 a.m. phone calls begging you to pinch hit when youre understaffed. Best be prepared for mora hours than your schedule would suggest on paper.2. Your duties expand far and wideThe definition of nursing, as it turns out, has a lot mora to it than just the medical care you were trained to give. Expect also to have to perform the tasks of waitress, housekeeper, advocate, crusader, IT person, mediator, electrician, errand runner, and counselor. The more your realize how much outside stuff will factor into your ability to get your actual job done, the better a nurse youll be.3. Your memory game must be on pointIf you dont have an outstanding memory, youd better come up with a mnemonic system to keep things better in your head, or at least be extremely organized and know where youve recorded the details you really cant forget. Youll be expected to know without hesitation details about your patient, their disease profile, the technology youll need to wield, medication interactions, etc. Often as a matter of life and death.4. Your mistakes will be plentifulIt would be nave to think that you wont make them. You will. Everyone does. The first one will feel awful, and youll probably cry, but youll be very unlikely ever to make it again. Do your best to learn from your mistakes. Theyll make you a much better nurse. And take extra care with medicationstheyre the easiest thing to mess up5. You will learn how to handle the most difficult thingNursing school, no matter how much you think it has, cannot prepare you to witness your first, second, or two hundredth death. You will see hundreds and they will not get easier. Each will be different and tragic in their own way.6. You will develop a sick sense of humorIf you dont have one already, you will soon. You and your coworkers will find yourselves making jokes youd never even realize were joke-worthy before you became a nurse. Just go with it. This is how we keep each other sane.7. You will be attached to the phoneYoull be dealing with patients a great deal. Youll be expected to be graceful under fire. But youll also spend an ungodly amount of time, tedious time, on the telephone. Other departments, doctors, pharmacies, insurance c ompanies, supply companies, etc. Train yourself to have excellent phone demeanor and youll go far.8. Your body will take a beatingIt will hurt you. After almost every shift. And as you grow older and more seasoned in your career, it will only hurt more. Youre standing, walking, lifting patients and equipment. It takes a toll. Take good care of yourself. Stretch. Learn to optimize your body mechanicsstanding, sitting, bending, lifting. Wear compression stockings and good, supportive shoes.9. Your friends and family become bonus patientsYoure never going to be off the clock. Not as long as your friends and family have cell phones and cameras and can send you their complaints and health questions. Just get used to it. Youll have a hard time turning loved ones away when you or your colleagues might be of help.10. Your pay is not as high as it should beIt will never be enough for the amount of work youre expected to do just to perform your base duties. But there are always opportunities for you to pick up extra shifts and overtime. If you can do the extra work, you can make the extra cash.11. Your schedule will be all over the placeKiss your weekends and holidays goodbye. And be prepared to explain to your friends and family why you cant always be counted on to come to dinners and birthday parties and weekends away. Eventually youll all get used to the way things have to be.12. Your second family will be at workYour coworkers will become your family. Youll be battle tested. And youll see everything, process everything, mourn and celebrate everything as a little unit. Youll love and hate them, and celebrate most holidays by their side.13. You will come to depend upon breakfastIs more important for you than for almost any one else in any other career. Make sure you eat it, even if you do it during your commute. It might be the only chance you get to eat. And try to load up on protein bars or drinks to keep you going when you only have two minutes to eat and no time t o chew14. You will learn the meaning of commitmentProbably the most important thing to ask yourself is how much you actually want this. Nursing isnt for everyone. Its a thankless, underappreciated, underpaid profession, but if its what you love, youll be able to hang in there no matter what. Do a bit of soul searching to find the kind of dedication youll need to keep you going during the course of your long career.

Frequently asked professional school interview questions
Frequently asked professional school interview questions Share Share via TwitterShare via FacebookShare via Google PlusShare via LinkedInShare via E-mail It is important to practice answering interview questions out loud. Going over your answers in your head is not enough Remember that your answers will be far mora meaningful and memorable if you share brief anecdotes and specific examples that support the statements you make, rather than relying on generalizations that could apply to anyone. Your motivation and the testing of your motivation. Why do you want to be a doctor (optometrist/dentist/nurse/PA, etc.)?When did your interest in this profession first arise? What other experiences confirmed this interest?(Note that general statements about liking science or wanting to help people are insufficient. You must provide specific examples of ways you have confirmed your interest in your intended career. Take time to practice your answer to this question. It is a very common fi rst question for interviewers to ask.) Related careers you have not chosen. Why not a career as a dentist/physician assistant/nurse/etc.?Why not a career in research? If you want to help people, why not become a minister or a psychologist or a teacher?Your understanding of professional school. Why do you think you will do well in vet school? What makes for a good nursing student?Your vorstellung for your career. What would you like to be doing ten years from now?Do you know which specialty you would like to pursue?(Note in answering this question, it is okay to say that you are going in with an open mind, but if you state that you are definitely interested in a particular specialty, you should be able to back that up with meaningful clinical experience you have gained in that specialty.)Questions that investigate your life choices. Why did you choose your particular major? Why did you take time off after college? The nature of your support groups (because these have been shown to be essenti al for success in professional school)What is your family like?/What are your friends like? Do they support your decision?Your likes and dislikes, and how you perform under adverse conditions. What is the biggest adversity you have overcome? What was the best experience in your life? What was the worst experience in your life?Your ability to engage in realistic self-evaluation.What are your strong points? What are your weak points?(You do need to be able to discuss your weaknesses. Pretending you have none is not believable, and you should not take the easy way out by giving yourself a backhanded compliment, such as I am a perfectionist. What you should do is to acknowledge an area of weakness, but also to identify how you are working on getting better in that area. Think about how you might answer this type of question ahead of time, as it can be difficult to answer on the fly.)Your outside interests. These types of questions might be looking into ways that you exhibit intellectual curi osity outside of your academic work or ways that you verstndigung im strafverfahren with stress. What are the last two non-school books you have read? Did you like them? Why did you like them? What do you do for relaxation?Poor performancein the past.Interviewers ask this to assess if you have learned from them and have become more resilient, as a result.I see that your grades in your sophomore year took a hit. What happened?Other Interview TipsHow should I dress? It is important to appear as professional as possible during the interview. Generally, this means suits for men and women. Choose outfits that are clean and well-fitted to your body, so that the interviewer can focus on your answers, not your clothes or accessories. Wear shoes that look professional but are comfortable enough for going on a universittsgelnde tour. Bring one briefcase or professional-looking bag in it, bring a water bottle and a snack. Who are the interviewers? The types of interviewers vary. They may be prof essors from one of the science departments, clinicians, local members of the community, or current students of the program. Your interviewers will have varying styles, which should not be surprising. Some might be pushy, some laid back, some friendly, some antagonistic, some active, some passive. But they are all skilled at interviewing. Do not be offended by their mannerisms. Some will have read your folder before you arrive. Others feel that they get to know you better if they do not look at your folder until after the interview. In all cases, your interviewers will serve as your advocates before the rest of the committee, so they are looking for information with which they use to convince the rest of the committee that you should be accepted. Should I send a thank you note after the interview? It is a nice gesture to send your interviewers a hand-written thank you note after the interview. At the conclusion of each interview, ask your interviewer(s) for their geschftliches mitei nander cards that way, you will have their contact information. You should send your thank you notes out within a few days of the interview, and tailor each note specifically to the conversation you had with each interviewer. In addition to being courteous and professional, thank you notes also help you stand out and be remembered. Marine Corps Mess Night Tradition
Marine Corps Mess Night TraditionMarine Corps Mess Night TraditionWhen members of the 1953 3rd Marine Regiment combat swim team were invited to have dinner with their British rivals in the midst of an annual competition, they did not realize the following events would lead to one of the Marine Corps fruchtwein honored traditions. During the competition, Marines from the swim team were invited to attend what the British Royal Marines call a mess night. It was a tradition that dates back to the days of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The Tradition As Gunnery Sgt. Johnnie C. Watkins, the Sergeants Course staff noncommissioned officer in charge at SNCO Academy, Camp Hansen explained, the event has evolved into a distinct celebration unique to U.S. Marines conducting it today. The purpose mess night is to recognize and pay homage to the Marines who came before us, the Brunswick, Ga., native explained. It also gives us a chance as a band of brothers to socializewith one another in our best dress uniform.? The mess night is fashioned to fit a formalgathering with a military flavor present. A Marine is assigned to be president of the mess he is in charge and controls the flow of events. The vice-president of the mess, or Mr. Vice, as the title has come to be known, acts as the enforcer of the presidents decisions and also regulates who may speak to the president. Invited guests are also part of the group. Conventionally, their distribution policy is at the head table with the president. The remainder of the participants makes up the mess. They are the heart of the eventand are expected to pay fines as the president sees fit for issues brought up by the mess men. During the formal meal portion of the mess night, members of the mess have the opportunity to charge another mess man with a fine if he has a legitimate reason to. A mess member must stand at attention and ask Mr. Vices permission to address the mess. Mr. Vice has the option to turn the requ est away or to forward it to the president. If the president grants permission, the mess member must state his case on why his comrade must be fined. If the mess member makes a good case, the president fines the guilty party a certain amount as determined by him, or forces the defendant to perform a show for the mess, Watkins said. The president also forcescertain members of the mess to perform humorous rituals, Watkins added, It all depends on how creative the Marine sitting in as president is. Other procedures also go into the tradition of mess night. It starts with a social hour where Marines of the mess have drinks with one another as well as meet and greet the guests. The formalities of mess night begin when the mess marches in, followed by the head table guests. Then the fun of mess night begins with the meal. Marines of the mess sit down to a formal dinner, normally Prime Rib. During this time, Marines bring forth outrageous situations to be fined, Watkins explained. In the 2 5 plus mess nights Ive been to since Ive been a Marine, Ive seen a lot of insane situations, Watkins recalls, For example, Ive seen Marines have a pizza delivered to another member of the mess during the meal. An intermission will then sound after the mess portion of the night, followed by the toasts given by members of the mess. Tributes are given to battles Marines have fought in the past as well as the future, Watkins said. The toasts of the mess is what mess night is all about, Watkins mentioned. It pays honor and respect to all the campaigns the Marine Corps has fought in. The final toast is always to the success of the Marine Corps, stated Watkins. Other portions of the mess night are included as well. Normally a guest speaker will make a presentation, The Prisoner of War/Missing in Action table is recognized, and the kitchens head chef will parade the beef in regards to the mess liking. For some Marines, mess night is a rare occasion that all Marines should take full advantag e of, said Sgt. Iris M. Feliciano, wire noncommissioned officer in charge, communications platoon, 12th Marine Regiment. How often do Marines get in their best dress uniform and spend an evening like this with the people they work with? the Chicago native asked. Its rare to have everyone from a unit, from the commanding officer to the lowest private, all in one place to socialize with one another, he explained. Feliciano also feels that mess night is more than just a tradition its a learning experience as well. Mess night builds knowledge on customs and courtesies, as well as camaraderie, Feliciano claimed. One of its purposes is to build Esprit de Corps, and until youre a part of one it doesnt mean much, explained Feliciano. For those who have not been a part of a mess night, Marines who have been around the Corps several years and attended many mess nights recommend that no one pass up the opportunity to participate in one. I strongly encourage all Marines to attend and support a mess night in their unit, said Sgt. Maj. Efrem A. Wilson, director of SNCO Academy. Its all about educating, training and leading Marines.

Tell me what you did today, and Ill tell you who you areTell me what you did today, and Ill tell you who you areYou live your life in 24 hour periods. Momentum is created or destroyed every day with the first few decisions you make.Additionally, few people spend time planning and imagining the life they want to have and the part they want to become. Very few people live intentionally each day toward a higher vision. fruchtwein people are solely living day-to-day, rather than maximizing each day to make enormous progredienzion toward a bigger and better future.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladde rs magazines on Flipboard deckblatting Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreYou are what you repeatedly do. - Will DurantHow is your day going, today?Seriously.Look back on all the things youve done so far. What does that actually look like? What activities must happen daily for you to live exactly how you want to be living?- - - In this article, Im going to show youHow you can consistently live better and better daysHow you can set-up your days the night b efore in order to make success inevitableHow to consistently make more progress each day than fruchtwein people make in a month or yearHow to create the life you can only imagineLets start4 things your brain needs daily to thriveBefore diving into how to create an optimal day, its important to take a look at your brain, and what makes your brain happy. At the most basic level, your brain needs 4 things in order to thriveNutritionOxygenInformationLoveNutritionWhen a man makes his thoughts pure, he no longer desires impure food. - James AllenThe quality of food you put into your body matters. You become what you consume, literally. The best foods for brain health includeNuts and seeds - particularly almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seedsVegetables - particularly avocados, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beetsLeafy greens - particularly spinach, broccoli, celery, and kaleFish - particularly salmon, sardines, and tunaBerries - particularly blueberries, strawberr ies, and acai berriesSpices - particularly cinnamon, sage, thyme, and turmericHealthy fats - particularly coconut oil and olive oilDark chocolate - one of the only foods shown to acutely boost mood, focus, and alertness, according to a University of Nottingham studyHealthy grains - University of Toronto researchers recently determined that eating carbohydrate-rich foods like oatmeal is equivalent to a shot of glucose, a.k.a. blood sugar, injected into your brainThe worst foods for brain health includeAnything with artificial sugar - particularly fruit juices, soda, candyAnything that has artificial and white flourAlchoholMost dairyOxygenBack in the day, the majority of exercise studies focused on the parts of the body from the neck down, like the heart and lungs. But now we are finding that we need to go north, to the brain, to show the true benefits of a physically active lifestyle on an individual. - Ozioma Okonkwo, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Wiscons in School of Medicine and Public HealthThe amount of oxygen your brain gets determines how well it functions. Just because you breath air doesnt mean your brain is getting the quantity and quality of oxygen it needs to thrive. The brain uses about three times as much oxygen as muscles in the body doBrain cells are very sensitive to decreases in oxygen levels and dont survive or function well very long without itDaily fitness is essential to brain health and having a body that can provide maximal oxygen to your brain. SpecificallyOne study found that daily fitness is good for memory and decreases chances of AlzheimersOkonkwos research has shown that people who exercise have greater brain volume in areas of the brain associated with reasoning and executive function. In an interview with TIME, he stated, Weve done a series of studies showing that increased aerobic capacity boosts brain structure, function and cognition, he says, Other people have found exercise can improve mood.Aerobic exercise, like running and swimming, appears to be best for brain health since these increase your heart rate, which means the body pumps more blood to the brain, says Okonkwo. But strength training, like weight lifting, may also bring benefits to the brain by increasing heart rate.InformationYour brain needs information to process in order to continually develop new connections. If the brain isnt firing, its elend wiring, and this ages it.If you dont use your brain, you lose it very quickly. Memory fades and reality becomes less clear and compelling. The problem with most of the information people consume is that it is repetitive and low quality - like putting junk in your car, it doesnt help your brain function well, but actually damages it long-term. For example, scanning Facebook or passively scanning articles like this one dont challenge the brain enough. In order for your brain to thrive, you need to continually give it higher quality information, which is often above your cogn itive level. You also want to learn actively, which means youre taking notes and linking what youre learning in your memory through visualization.Your memory is entirely based on connection and imagination. So when youre learning something new, you want to be very active and imaginative with that information. You want to link what youre learning with as many other things as possible. The more visual and exaggerated you are with how you approach new information, the more memorable it will be. As you change your memory, you change yourself. Thus, learning is not about retaining or storing information, but rather, it is about reframing your entire paradigm. Thus, the purpose of information is not simply to put more information into the existing mental model you currently have. True learning is emotional and imaginative - thus, it is intended to reframe your entire mental model. If you dont see and operate differently in the world, you didnt change.Change is very, very good for the brai n. Its one of the best ways to anti-age your brain and keep it healthy. Doing the saatkorn things over and over and not continually pushing and expanding your mindset and mental model is very bad for the brain. It trains your brain to be lazy. It keeps you stuck in a limiting identity and with an aging and decaying brain.See the world differently every day.Learn something new that changes how you view the world every day. This is how you heal your brain, keep it young, and keep it healthy.LoveLove is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for menschenfreundlich weaknesses. - Ann LandersResearch has shown that babies who dont receive love can die. Oxygen and nutrition arent enough. The brain thrives on physical touch and emotional connection. For over 75 years, Harvards Grant and Glueck study has tracked the physical and emoti onal health of two groups456 poor people in Boston from 1939 to 2014 (the Grant Study)268 graduates from Harvards classes of 19391944 (the Glueck study)After following these groups and testing them (e.g., blood samples, brain scans) for several decades, the findings have been compiled.Heres the conclusionThe clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period. - Robert Waldinger, director of the Harvard Study of Adult DevelopmentAs Melanie Curtin reported on Inc., The biggest predictor of your happiness and fulfillment overall in life is, basically, love.Although the Harvard study lays the foundation, there is other compelling research on the importance of human relationships. This meta analysis showed a 50% increased likelihood of survival for participants with stronger social relationships. Put simply, if you have healthy relationships, your chances of survival increase by 50%.The most loving and deep relationships a re built on a very simple foundation giving and gratitude. When the focus is on what you can give, rather than what you can get, the relationship becomes a gift to both of you.Theres no holding back.No keeping score.Only in such relationships can you be fully present to the moment and fully un-inhibited in the expression of your love.- - - Every single day, you needgood nutritionoxygeninformationand love.Without these, your brain and soul will not thrive, but instead will shrivel and die. These are the basics that you should build your day around. The rest of this article focuses on prioritization and productivity. If you are intentional and strategic, you can achieve more in one day than most people achieve in a week.Even more, if youre clear about what you want, you can make enormous progress, daily, toward important goals. Making clear and powerful progress daily is more than many people can say theyve done in years. Many if not most people are not pointing their life in a desired direction. They are in jobs and relationships they hate. Put simply, they are climbing a ladder that is facing the wrong wall. As bestselling author, Ryan Holiday has said, This is a fundamental irony of most peoples lives. They dont quite know what they want to do with their lives. Yet they are very active. Thus, if you can make tangible progress in a desired direction every single day, youll be living far more powerfully and intentionally than most of the population. If you can add productivity and courage to your day, you can radically transform your whole life in a matter of a few short years. For the remainder of this article, Ill coverSetting yourself up for success the evening beforeHaving an optimal morning routineAnd living daily such that youre continually expanding both inside and outside as a personUse Ernest Hemingways evening routine for maximized creativity and productivityThe best way is always to stop when you are going good and when you know what will happen next. If you do that every day you will never be stuck That way your subconscious will work on it all the time. But if you think about it consciously or worry about it you will kill it and your brain will be tired before you start. - Ernest HemingwayApparently, Ernest Hemingway would stop his writing sessions mid-sentence. He did this for a few reasonsSo that his subconscious would continue chewing-on the ideaSo that when he started writing again the next day, he didnt have to start from scratch, but could continue where he left off (already with a sense of momentum )Your evening routine doesnt need to be long. But like Hemingway, its good to know exactly what youre going to do when you wake up. Its good to have done even just a little bit of work so that you have somewhere to pick-up when you first get started.Facing a leer slate first thing in the morning can be difficult. If you take just a few minutes to consider what youre first going to do, and even give a minute or two of thought a s to what that will involve, then you dont have to start from scratch.Pull out your journal just before bed and write down the first few things youre going to do the next morning. Then, as it relates to the first task or project, write down a few ideas related to that thing.Your brain is far more creative in the morning and far more analytical at night. Use your analytical evening strength to provide a simple plan and starting-point so your creative morning brain can run wild when you first wake up.Theres one more side-benefit to creating a runway for your next morning. As Hemingway stated, your subconscious will then be able to focus on and make important connections while you sleep. Thomas Edison did this himself, which is why he was such a prolific and productive creative person (something rare, indeed). He actually had a process. In his own words, Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious.- - - This morning routine will save you 20+ hours per weekTypically, we h ave a window of about three hours where were really, really focused. Were able to have some strong contributions in terms of planning, in terms of thinking, in terms of speaking well, - Dr. Rod Friedman told Harvard Business ReviewAccording to psychologist Ron Friedman, the first three hours of your day are your most precious for maximized productivity. This makes sense on several levels. Lets start with sleep. Research confirms the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex, is most active and readily creative immediately following sleep. Your subconscious mind has been loosely mind-wandering while you slept, making contextual and temporal connections. So, immediately following sleep, your mind is most readily active to do thoughtful work.On a different level, the science of willpower and self-control confirm that your willpower - or energy levels - are strongest immediately following sleep. The longer you go throughout your day, the less willpower you have. In other words, you expe rience decision fatigue throughout your day.So, your brain is most attuned first thing in the morning, and so are your energy levels. Consequently, the best time to do your best work is during the first three hours of your day.During your morning time, you want to do a few important thingsSuper-hydration - drink 2040 ounces of water - this will wake you up, making you more alert (your brain needs oxygen to function well)Pull out your journal and begin writingCreate a mind-map of your ideal selfWrite about the top 1-3 things you want to achieve that dayThe purpose of this 10-30 minute morning journal session is to reframe yourself as the person you want to become. You want to put yourself into a peak and heightened state where you can live with intention.Creating a mind-map and also writing down your future goals is very powerful because it reshapes your mindset and memory. Mind-maps when done right work both your right and left brains because they are intended to be visual and emo tionally stimulating. In other words, you dont want to simply write down your goals. You want images and pictures of your future self and dreams to be in your face. The more imaginative, emotional, and exaggerated, the more they will become real to you the more theyll shape your memory and identity.Every day, you should write down and visualize your future self and dreams. Then, you want to be results-oriented throughout your day in order to achieve those dreams as fast as possible. When you begin your day right, you start with confidence and momentum. Little wins in the morning lead to big wins throughout your day and throughout your life.Start right, end right.Start with vision and focus and youll be moving in a clear direction, rather than aimlessly moving without direction. After youve put yourself into a peak and intentional state, its good to begin working on the project you left undone or created a simple plan for the night before. If you work on your most important work first th ing in the morning and without distraction, youll make progress daily. Over enough time, youll have made HUGE progress. This is what Darren Hardy calls The Compound Effect. As he stated, Its not the big things that add up in the end its the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary. After youve emotionally and imaginatively created and experienced your future vision, and after youve done your most important and creative work, then its time to get the body moving. Its time to workout and give your brain a little bit of a break But also, as you exercise, youre also giving your brain a HUGE boost, which will provide you with tons of energy and cognitive ability for the rest of your dayIf your 3-5 hours before your workout were focused, you could probably be done for the day. Youll have made more progress in your morning than many people make in weeks or months.- - - Use forcing functions to become results-focusedWherever you ar e, make sure youre there. - Dan SullivanIf youre like most people, your workday is a blend of low-velocity work mixed with continual distraction (e.g., social media and email). Most peoples working time is not done at peak performance levels. When most people are working, they do so in a relaxed fashion. Makes sense, they have plenty of time to get it done. However, when you are results-oriented, rather than being busy, youre 100 percent on when youre working and 100 percent off when youre not. Why do anything half-way? If youre going to work, youre going to work.To get the best results in your fitness, research has found that shorter but more intensive exercise is more effective than longer drawn-out exercise. The concept is simple Intensive activity followed by high quality rest and recovery. Most of the growth actually comes during the recovery process. However, the only way to truly recover is by actually pushing yourself to exhaustion during the workout. The same concept applies to work. The best work happens in short intensive spurts. By short, Im talking 1-3 hours. But this must be Deep Work, with no distractions, just like an intensive workout is non-stop. Interestingly, your best work - which for most people is thinking - will actually happen while youre away from your work, recovering. In one study, only 16 percent of respondents reported getting creative insight while at work. Ideas generally came while the person was at home, in transportation, or during recreational activity. The most creative ideas arent going to come while sitting in front of your monitor, says Scott Birnbaum, a vice president of Samsung Semiconductor. The reason for this is simple. When youre working directly on a task, your mind is tightly focused on the problem at hand (i.e., direct reflection). Conversely, when youre not working, your mind loosely wanders (i.e., indirect reflection). While driving or doing some other form of recreation, the external stimuli in your environment (li ke the buildings or other landscapes around you) subconsciously prompt memories and other thoughts. Because your mind is wandering both contextually (on different subjects) and temporally between past, present, and future, your brain will make distant and distinct connections related to the problem youre trying to solve (eureka)Case in point when youre working, be at work. When youre not working, stop working. By taking your mind off work and actually recovering, youll get creative breakthroughs related to your work. You can ensure that youre fully present in what youre doing by applying a concept known as forcing functions. According to entrepreneur, Dan MartellA forcing function is any task, activity or event that forces you to take action and produce a result. I believe the best way to work is to put ourselves into a position to execute. Essentially, forcing us to complete a task.Forcing functions are situational factors you put into place to ensure you succeed. In other words, yo u want to set up your environment so that your default and subconscious behavior is what you want it to be. You also want to set things up so that self-sabotage is difficult. Here are a few examplesWhen youre done with work, leave your phone at your office (this will force you to be present when youre home)Remove all unhealthy food from your house (make one decision that frees your mind from having to consciously control or suppress your behavior)Work at a library and leave your laptop charger at home (so you only have a few hours to work until your computer dies)Set short timelines (To achieve great things you need 1) a plan, and 2) not enough time - Meg Jay TED talk)High investment - when you begin investing money into a goal, you immediately become emotionally committedDo at least one thing daily that terrifies youA persons success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have. - Tim FerrissBut you dont have to constant ly be battling your fears. Actually, Darren Hardy has said that you can be a coward 99.9305556% of the time (to be exact). You only need to be courageous for 20 seconds at a time.Twenty seconds of fear is all you need. If you courageously confront fear for 20 seconds every single day, before you know it, youll be in a different socio-economic and social situation.According to Wayne Gretzky, the best hockey player of all time, You miss 100% of the shots you dont take.Make that call.Ask that question.Pitch that idea.Post that video.Reach out to that potential mentor. If you do one or even a few things daily that are outside of your comfort zone, eventually youll be living a different life. Although most of your courageous attempts may not be successful, some of them will succeed. Sometimes, youll catch a lucky break. And these breaks are what separate you from the masses.Even more important though is that youll become more confident in yourself. You cannot have confidence without posit ive and goal-directed behavior. You also cannot get motivation and momentum without being active and moving.Your network is your net worth. Do whatever you can to get access to the people you want to work with and work for.Be bold.- - - ConclusionHow you spend each day matters. If you optimize for brain health, priority, and productivity, you can live a masterful life. You can make enormous progress in all that you do.You can create and achieve enormous visions.Every day, your brain will change because youll be learning new things and becoming a new person.Enjoy this beautiful life. Low Volume Manufacturing
Low Volume Manufacturing Low Volume Manufacturing In the earliest manufacturing, a skilled craftsman created goods one by one. The demand for cheaper and faster products led to factories and mass production. Now, high-quantity production facilities churn out millions of products each year. But what if you only need to produce 1,000, 100, or even 10 per year? Low-volume manufacturing is fairly common in the medical device industry, for instance, as new concepts are tested in pilot markets or in clinical trials before larger volumes are necessary. Manufacturing processes, entwurf options, and product aesthetics become limited as the costs of tooling and setup become mora significant components of the project budget. Vendors are less inclined to respond, and client expectations require more active management. There are, however, opportunities among the challenges. For high-quantity production, the initial investment spreads across the parts. For low-quantity production, though, capital in vestment can overwhelm the part cost. There is a balancing act among desired features, cost, and speed. Using commercial off-the-shelf parts in low-volume production limit aesthetics and creativity.Designing complex products for low-volume production usually requires compromise. By understanding the limitations of each process, an engineer can tailor designs to make great parts with low-volume techniques. In addition, a designer can amplify the part count by making the left and right sides the same or by using the same part in multiple places. The principles of design for manufacture extend to all processes.Educate clients about the challenges and compromises of low-volume manufacturing early, so that everyone knows what to expect. Understand the fabrication volume and select an appropriate manufacturing process early so the design can be optimized for the best form and function. This is generally better than trying to push the limits of a manufacturing technology to achieve somethi ng for which it is not appropriate.Vendors can be one of the more frustrating challenges in low-volume manufacturing. In mass production, more product equals more money. Vendors tend to be less responsive to small-quantity orders unless they are specifically set up for that scale. The key is finding vendors that specialize in lower-volume production. They will be set up to run several small jobs at once with easily configurable manufacturing and assembly areas. However, it is important to confirm their capabilities and process controls. When ordering off-the-shelf parts, try to use parts that come in standard sizes or have multiple sources. If a part is discontinued, another can be substituted without requiring a substantial product redesign. When this kind of backup is not possible, a low-volume manufacturer must rely on a single-source part. In that case, develop contingency plans in case the part becomes obsolete. While low-volume manufacturing has its challenges, it also offers ad vantages. By using processes suited to small batches, prototype and production units can have similar components and materials. This enables early performance testing and preliminary verification and validation exercises, reducing the surprises that can show up in first article builds.Being aware of the challenges involved with design for low-volume manufacture early in the design process can make it much easier. Knowing the limitations of the processes can shorten design time and help with managing clients expectations. You may need to make compromises but, with good design practices and some ingenuity, it is possible to bring a successful, aesthetically pleasing product to market in low volumes within a reasonable budget.Adapted from Turn Down the Volume, by Eric Schneider, for Mechanical Engineering, April 2010.For high-quantity production, the initial investment spreads across the parts. For low-quantity production, though, capital investment can overwhelm the part cost.
